The Business Acumen Gap That Stalls Careers

1 min read

There's a point in every career where the criteria change without anyone telling you. Up to director level, you're evaluated on execution. Above it, you're evaluated on judgment about money.

Learn to read the business like an owner

Know how your organization makes money, what its margins look like, and which levers leadership is pulling this year. Ask for the numbers. Read the earnings call transcript. Sit in on the budget review.

Speak in outcomes, not activities

"We launched the program" is an activity. "We reduced turnover by 12 points, which protected $1.4M in replacement cost" is an outcome. Executives fund outcomes.

Get the reps before you need them

Volunteer for the work that carries a budget, a forecast, or a vendor negotiation. Financial acumen is a muscle, and the boardroom is a bad place for your first rep.
